The Summer's Way Rhabdomyosarcoma Workshop held this past May 11th and 12th at Rose Medical Center was a tremendous success! This international workshop brought together the leading Rhabdomyosarcoma experts from both clinical and scientific arenas.  During this two day concentrated workshop only the most cutting edge research work was presented. Colleagues challenged one another, and equally importantly, collaboration was established. Unique to the workshop was the inclusion of Foundations, families and patients who have been impacted by Rhabdo and their voices were likewise heard. A true coalition was established amongst all who attended. There were many action items that developed from this workshop, and it is anticipated that in accomplishing these initiatives, we will get ever closer to making Rhabdo survivable.

the workshop was filled with passion, with energy and challenges to the paradigm on how we look at treating Rhabdo. By all accounts it proved to be a success beyond all expectations. A success in collaboration between researchers and clinicians. A success in promoting an inclusiveness between the scientific community with families, patients and foundations impacted by Rhabdo.  Most of all, a success in establishing a coalition between all partners and the ultimate goal of finding that elusive cure.

We have much work ahead, but I am hopeful and confident. Together we will indeed make a difference!

Sam is a very accomplished and involved young woman. While earning excellent grades throughout her four years at Grandview, Sam enrolled in many of Grandview’s most rigorous AP- and Honors-level courses covering all curricular areas. Sam was extremely involved in the Grandview community. She was a talented member of the Grandview Chamber Orchestra for four years and served as the captain of the Girls’ Swim Team this past winter. Sam was also actively involved in working to make the Grandview community safer. In this effort she traveled to Washington, DC to participate in the March for Our Lives against gun violence. Sam will attend the University of Massachusetts in the fall. Her ultimate goal is to attend medical school and become a surgeon. After witnessing her mother’s valiant struggle with cancer, Sam is committed to supporting cancer patients. She is also planning to work in the area of cancer research, making cancer diagnoses distant memories.

Congratulations to the 2017-18 recipient of the Summer’s Way Foundation Scholarship, Samantha Hufford!
